Fibre and fermented foods are often presented as rivals. They are not. They enter the gut from different angles and can sit comfortably in the same eating pattern.
In a 2025 randomised trial of 105 healthy adults, adding high-fibre foods for four weeks improved bowel-related quality of life and increased several microbe groups linked with short-chain fatty-acid production.
Fibre gives microbes something to use
Dietary fibre is a large family of carbohydrates. Some fibres reach the colon, where microbes ferment them. Because fibres behave differently, a mix of fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds is more useful than relying on one source.
Fermented does not always mean probiotic
Yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut are made by microorganisms. Depending on how the food is produced and stored, it may contain live cultures and fermentation products. But a food is only probiotic when it contains identified live microorganisms shown to provide a health benefit in a defined amount.
A 2026 randomised crossover trial asked 87 healthy adults to eat fresh or pasteurised sauerkraut for four weeks. It did not find a change in gut-barrier measures. That is a useful reminder: a promising food category does not guarantee every outcome in every study.
