Two probiotics can belong to the same species and still be meaningfully different. The difference can sit in a short code at the end of the name: the strain. It is easy to overlook. It is also one of the most useful details on a probiotic label.
Think of it like this. “Apple” is broad. “Granny Smith” is specific. Both are apples, but you would not expect them to taste or cook in exactly the same way. Microbes work at a much finer scale, but the principle helps: genus tells you the broad family, species narrows it, and the strain identifies the particular microorganism.
That identity matters because probiotic evidence does not automatically transfer from one strain to every other member of the same species. A long ingredient list, a large CFU number or the word “probiotic” cannot tell you on its own whether the formula matches the research you are relying on.
The name is the beginning of the evidence trail
A complete probiotic name usually has three parts:
- Genus: the broad group, such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium
- Species: a narrower biological classification
- Strain: the letters and numbers that identify the specific microorganism
For example, in Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG, “GG” is the strain designation. That final detail gives researchers, health professionals and consumers a way to connect the organism on the label with the organism used in a study.
Without it, you may know the species but not the exact strain. That makes it harder to check whether a claim, dose or result genuinely applies to the product in your hand.
Why two strains of the same species are not interchangeable
Strains can differ in traits that affect how they behave. These may include their ability to survive manufacturing and storage, tolerate stomach acid and bile, interact with other microbes, attach temporarily to surfaces in the gut, or produce particular compounds.
That does not mean every effect is strain specific. Some mechanisms appear to be shared across a species or even a broader group of microbes. An expert review led by ISAPP researchers made this nuance clear: certain effects may be shared, while specific health benefits still require appropriate human evidence.
The practical rule is simple. The more specific the promise, the more closely the evidence should match the strain, dose, population and outcome being discussed.
What the research says
A systematic review and meta analysis of 228 trials found evidence that probiotic efficacy can be both strain specific and condition specific. In other words, a strain associated with a result in one context should not be treated as proof that every probiotic will do the same thing, or that the same strain will produce every proposed benefit.
The World Gastroenterology Organisation takes a similarly precise approach. Its global guideline links clinical evidence to specific strains or strain combinations at effective doses rather than treating “probiotics” as one interchangeable category.
This is why a label that identifies strains is useful. It does not prove the product works. It makes the product auditable. You can trace the name, examine the research and see whether the amount and intended use line up.
Named strains versus proprietary blends
A blend is not automatically a problem. Several identified strains can be combined in a well designed formula, and some combinations have been studied as combinations.
The problem is opacity.
A proprietary blend may list a collection of species under one total amount while withholding the quantity of each component. Some labels also stop at the species level, leaving out strain designations altogether. That makes sensible questions difficult to answer:
- Which exact organisms are included?
- How much of each is present?
- Does the evidence relate to these strains or merely to similar sounding species?
- Is the stated CFU count guaranteed through shelf life or only at manufacture?
Transparency does not require a single strain product. It requires enough information to understand what is actually there.
More strains and more CFU are not automatically better
Probiotic shopping often becomes a numbers contest. Ten strains looks stronger than three. Fifty billion CFU looks stronger than ten billion. Biology is not that tidy.
CFU, or colony forming units, estimates the number of viable microorganisms. It matters, but it needs context. The relevant amount depends on the strain and the evidence. A bigger number cannot compensate for an unidentified organism, an unsuitable dose, poor stability or a claim that has not been tested.
The same applies to strain count. More strains may make sense when the combination itself has a rationale and supporting evidence. More is not a quality standard on its own.
A better question than “How many?” is “Why these ones, at this amount?”
A five point label check
- Look for the full identity. Genus and species are useful. A strain code makes the ingredient more traceable.
- Check the CFU statement. Look for a clear amount per serve and whether viability is stated through the end of shelf life, not simply at manufacture.
- Match evidence to the product. Check whether research used the same strain or studied combination, at a comparable dose, for a relevant group and outcome.
- Read the rest of the formula. Sweeteners, fibres, excipients and other actives affect the total product experience. The probiotic panel is only one part of the label.
- Be wary of universal promises. Gut symptoms have many causes. No strain is the answer to every digestive concern.
How we think about it at Gut Theory
Our preference is disclosure over mystery. The Daily Buffer identifies its three probiotic strains and states the total viable count, alongside the amount of every other active ingredient. There is no proprietary blend hiding the formula.
That does not turn a label into a clinical guarantee. It does something more useful: it lets you see what you are taking and gives the evidence somewhere specific to begin.

The short version
A named strain is not marketing decoration. It is an identity marker. It helps connect the product, the dose and the research.
When comparing probiotic products, do not stop at the largest CFU figure or the longest species list. Look for full strain names, clear amounts, viability through shelf life and evidence that matches the exact organism or combination.
Specific names make specific questions possible. That is what better probiotic transparency looks like.
