The words sound similar because they describe related ideas. The difference becomes simple once you focus on the job each one does.
Not every fibre is a prebiotic, and not every fermented food is a probiotic. Both terms require more than simply belonging to a broad food category.
Prebiotics: selected fuel
A prebiotic is a substance selectively used by microorganisms in the body that provides a health benefit. Many are fibres, but the important detail is which microbes can use them and what follows.
Probiotics: defined live microorganisms
A probiotic must be alive, identified and supplied in an amount supported for a particular benefit. “Good bacteria” is a description, not a complete label.
Synbiotics: a considered combination
A synbiotic combines live microorganisms with a substrate used by microorganisms. Some combinations are complementary; others are specifically designed so the substrate supports the microorganism. The formulation logic matters as much as the category name.
